  • Excitement!

So, thought I'd share a rather exciting story from this weekend.

Some friends and I went shopping in Canton, and we were at one outdoor vendor right near the road. All four lanes were packed with cars coming and going, and as we were right up near the street we heard sirens in the distance.
"It sounds like it's coming from both directions," I said, and we wondered what was going on. We had seen policemen directing traffic when we arrived, so didn't think much of it until the sirens got louder...and louder. A cop car appeared on the side of the road closest to us. A green pickup was swerving in front of it, and I initially though it was just trying to get out of the way. Suddenly two more cop cars appeared from the other direction, boxing the truck in as he swerved into the center turn lane. Cops jumped out of the cars in front and started shouting at the two men inside the truck.
"Get out of the car! GET OUT OF THE CAR!!" I could see the passenger scrambling around for something inside the cab, and suddenly both cops pulled their guns.
    "GET OUT OF THE CAR!!"
Seeing the guns really freaked us out and we started to run, but still wanted to see what was happening. The two men finally got out of the truck and the officers slammed them against the side, cuffing them. The cop closest to us kept one hand on his prisoner and started pulling things out of the truck with the other, obviously looking for something.
A youngish man was walking towards them as all of this was going on, talking on a cell phone and then to one of the officers. Since they weren't screaming at him to get out of the way, we figured he must be involved in some way. Possibly a vendor who had just been robbed by those two men. I never saw either of the men in the truck holding a gun, but my friend Shawna said she saw one of them drop something in the back of the truck before he was cuffed. There were dozens of other people standing there watching with us, so they could have easily disappeared into a crowd if they decided to run. I think that's why I was initially so scared when the cops pulled their guns - if there had been a gunfight, we were definitely close enough to get hit. Both men were put in the back of the cop cars and an officer took over the truck and drove it away.

I have never seen an actual, guns-involved arrest happen, and it was pretty crazy to be that close. I'm very glad it went smoothly and that there was no shooting.

    Whew!

    Remember When It Rained

I love when lightning is way up in the clouds - heaping banks lit up from the inside by waves of pulsing light. There's such a silent majesty to it all.

I need to write more. It's a good outlet, a good way to stay organized and de-stressed. Last week was pretty intense. This one hasn't been so bad, but I'm still glad that tomorrow is Friday.

Right now I'm listening to Josh (see above) sing about rain while rain pounds outside. I'm thinking about the future and the past: things I'd change, things I hope will happen, things things things. Things is a funny word. This is all very disjointed, isn't it? Hmmm.

I have several topics I want to write about, I just need to get them organized in my head first. Expect more in a day or two.

How's the rest of Xanga been doing? Well, I hope?

  • A recent conversation at work

"Financial Aid, can I help you?"

"Hi, I need to talk to someone in Financial Aid about canceling my grants and everything. I....I've been diagnosed with cancer, and I won't be returning to school in the fall."

"Oh....ok. Let me transfer you to one of our representatives."

    "Thank you."

I transferred the call, heard the rep pick up in the other room, then sat at my desk just staring at the phone for a moment. Cancer. At what age...18? 19? 20? Dropping out of college to face months of chemo, crying, confusion.

    Yikes.

I don't know her name, talked to her for less than 30 seconds, but she's been on my mind all week. I hope she'll be ok.

  • Memories

It's funny how a few simple things can create a wave of homey memories. One of the girls at work has handwriting that is nearly identical to my older sister's, so I think of her every time I see it. Standing by a giant copy machine listening to the clunks and whirs make me think of my grandma. The mannerisms of one of the older office ladies makes me think of my grandma. The bottle of lotion sitting on the receptionist's desk makes me think of my grandma.

Ok, so offices make me think of grandma. She worked as bookkeeper for a Montessori school for years, and in the summers my sister and I would go help out. I remember watching the copy machine shoot out hundreds and hundreds of copies, staggering the stacks or printing on a rainbow of paper. She had pictures of us on her desk and I loved the frame that folded together like a little golden book. She always keep a bottle of lotion handy, and she always took off her rings before rubbing a scented squirt into her hands.

She always made us feel important as we helped out around the office, folding letters and watering plants. That's probably why I'm so comfortable in an office environment. She gave me great memories and aspirations.

I still miss her as much as I did that July day almost three years ago. I'm glad she got to meet Matt that summer, but heartbroken she couldn't be at our wedding this past December. There are so many things I have emotionally shared with her even though she couldn't be there physically. I know she knows, and I know she's happy where she is, but that doesn't stop me from missing her, and missing the time we had together.

    "...Blessed be Your name
When I'm found in the desert place
Though I walk through the wilderness
    Blessed Be Your name

    Every blessing You pour out
    I'll turn back to praise
When the darkness closes in, Lord
    Still I will say

Blessed be the name of the Lord
    Blessed be Your name
Blessed be the name of the Lord

    You give and take away
    You give and take away
My heart will choose to say
    Lord, blessed be Your name
    Blessed be Your glorious name..."
